A great visit from Daisy Troop 68099. And even a donation made to the program. Thanks Daisies!
A Living Legacy
Contributed by Hayley Barrett
Time stands still here. The road is quiet and lined with trees. Horses graze in grassy meadows. Ducks paddle in the pond. Children ride ponies through the woods.
This is Windrush Farm. For fifty years, people of all ages and abilities have come here to find healing and hope. In 1964, Mrs. Marjorie Kittredge founded Windrush, one of the first therapeutic riding establishments in the country, with two horses and the profound conviction that, “everyone can do more than they think they can.’’
Today, Windrush serves nearly two thousand people a year. The farm enjoys decades-long relationships with the Perkins School for the Blind, Special Olympics, and St. Ann’s Home and School, among others. Innovative offerings include equine-assisted experiences for veterans, local youth-at-risk programs, and Spaulding Rehabilitation clients. More than five hundred dedicated volunteers devote their time to keep the farm thriving.
We’ll Miss You, Gina
After an impressive 12 years as an employee and more than 6 years prior to that as a volunteer, Gina Armano, Windrush Farm’s co-volunteer coordinator, is retiring this month.
Not only is Gina responsible for organizing a yearly workforce of 500 volunteers, but she is also one of the driving forces behind the Dances with Horses Gala.
She is best known by her office mates for her “Italian sign language” and light-hearted spirit. We will miss you Gina. We wish you the best. Enjoy it.
Nathaniel Coolidge Awarded Marjorie V. Kittredge Award at Founder’s Luncheon
The second Founder’s Luncheon was held on Wednesday, May 21 at the Myopia Hunt Club. About 60 friends attended the event that awarded Prides Crossing resident, Nathaniel Coolidge with the Marjorie V. Kittredge Award.
The award was established in 2012 to recognize an individual whose unwavering support of Windrush Farm and the greater community embodies the true spirit of our founder and her legacy, Windrush Farm.
Bob Gore, Windrush Farm board president welcomed the crowd and Tim Murray, Windrush Farm Board member and longtime friend of Nathaniel Coolidge shared remarks with the group about this year’s award recipient.
Nathaniel Coolidge has the distinction of being the longest serving board member at Windrush Farm – more than thirty years.
DEB SHADE PRESENTED THE “AWARD FOR VOLUNTEER EXCELLENCE”
As Elizabeth Andrews so eloquently put, “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” For both Paul Spiers and Debra Shade, this couldn’t be more true.
Dr. Paul Spiers, of Danvers, was an avid supporter of Windrush Farm. His passion for helping others and going above and beyond the call of duty was admirable. After his passing in 2013, Windrush Farm established the “Award for Volunteer Excellence” in his memory.
The first award recipient is an active volunteer whose service has exceeded all expectations. Debra Shade’s dedication to Windrush Farm spans more than 23 years in a variety of capacities; program volunteer, board member, fundraising committee member and friend.
Topsfield Dentist Brightens Smiles, Donates To Charity
Each year, for four months, a select group of dentists across North America present everyone with a unique opportunity to have their teeth professional whitened while donating all of the proceeds to children’s charities. During this limited period of time, these dentists offer professional tooth whitening to their patients for less than the normal cost.
Dr. Peter McAllister of Topsfield, once again participated in the amazing Smiles for Life charity program. One hundred percent of proceeds go to charity, with half going to The Smiles For Life Foundation, benefiting National Children’s charities such as Garth Brooks’ Teammates for Kids, and the remaining half going to Windrush Farm, a local nonprofit horse farm in Boxford and North Andover specializing in teaching physically, emotionally, and learning disabled children and adults to ride and work with horses.
The Smiles for Life Foundation has raised many millions of dollars since it was organized in 1998. The funds have benefited over 500 children’s charities. In addition, Dr. McAllister has donated tents of thousands of dollars through Smiles For Life to local charities. He is proud to have chosen Windrush Farm as the recipient for 2014 Smiles For Life Donations.
“Smiles for Life is a win-win situation,” explains Greg Anderson, director of the Crown Council and one of the campaign’s founders. “Patients have a brighter smile, our member dentists are able to contribute to their community and—best of all—children who really need our help have a reason to smile.”
We’re so thankful and appreciative of Dr. McAllister’s generosity,” said Amanda Hogan, executive director of Windrush Farm. “It is because of passionate people like Dr. McAllister that Windrush Farm is able to offer such unique programming to more than the 1,700 kids, adults and veterans annually.”
